Anxiety when you still look like you're coping
When things look fine from the outside but feel tense underneath.
"High-functioning anxiety" is a phrase people often use. It is not a formal diagnosis, but it describes something a lot of people recognise: getting the job done while feeling wound up inside.
What this can feel like
You keep delivering at work and at home, and most people would say you are doing well. Underneath, there can be a steady hum of worry that rarely switches off.
Things you might notice
- Worrying about things ahead, or replaying conversations afterwards
- Finding it hard to switch off, even on days off
- Perfectionism, or over-preparing for things that others take in their stride
- Saying yes more often than you have capacity for
- Looking calm on the outside while feeling tense or exhausted
Things that may help
- Writing worries down, so they are on paper rather than circling
- Setting a boundary on one thing this week — a finish time, or a task you decline
- Movement, even a short walk between jobs
- A grounding or breathing exercise when the tension builds
When to get more support
If anxiety is affecting your daily life, your sleep or your relationships, it is worth speaking to your GP or someone you trust. Talking to a peer supporter can also be a good first step.
