When your head feels too full

Mental load, scattered focus and the feeling of always being behind.

Carrying a lot in your head — shifts, jobs at home, things you must not forget — can be tiring in a way that is easy to underestimate.

What this can feel like

Your attention is split across several things at once, so nothing gets your full focus and everything feels slightly unfinished.

Things you might notice

  • Holding a long mental list and worrying about dropping something
  • Jumping between tasks, or checking the same thing repeatedly
  • Feeling behind even after a busy day
  • Losing your thread mid-task

Things that may help

  • Write everything down in one place, however small
  • Sort the list into now, later, and not mine
  • Turn a vague job into one small next step
  • Pause briefly between tasks rather than rolling straight on
  • Use a grounding exercise when your thoughts feel scattered

When to get more support

If the overload is constant, or concentration problems are affecting your work or home life, speak to your GP or a peer supporter.
