Performing under pressure

Reliable on the outside, running low on the inside.

Being the person others rely on can be rewarding. It can also be draining, especially when pressure stops feeling like a phase and starts feeling normal.

What this can feel like

You keep performing, but the satisfaction fades. The next thing is always waiting, and rest can feel like something you have to earn.

Things you might notice

  • Being dependable outwardly while feeling drained inwardly
  • Feeling behind despite getting a lot done
  • Over-preparing, or checking work more than needed
  • Finding it hard to rest without guilt
  • Achieving things without much sense of satisfaction

Things that may help

  • Consciously mark tasks as finished rather than sliding into the next one
  • Choose one important but not urgent task each week
  • Decide in advance what "good enough" looks like for a job
  • Protect short pauses and proper rest days

When to get more support

If pressure has become the norm, or you feel persistently exhausted or detached, talk to someone — a manager you trust, your GP, or a peer supporter.
